On March 20, 2003, the Iraq War commenced with a surge of U.S. When captured, its reported that Saddam Hussein said, On December 13, 2003, the United States military captured Saddam Hussein. The capture of Omar al-Muslit and Latif proved vital to the operation, both giving up information leading to the capture of the elusive Saddam.
They eventually settled on two names: Muhammed Ibrahim Omar al-Muslit, a former bodyguard, and Basim Latif, a former chauffeur for Hussein. After multiple interrogations, US Intelligence came to the conclusion that majority of the Ba’ath Party members no longer had connections with the leader, and decided to focus solely on individuals with lifelong connections. The Task Force executed almost 600 operations over the course of four months, none of which led to the arrest of Saddam Hussein. Air Force Combat Controllers, Pararescuemen, and Tactical Air Control Party operators. Involved in the operation was SEAL Team Six Delta Force, 75th Ranger Regiment, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, the CIA’s Special Activities Division, U.S. Over four months, 600 missions were launched, but none resulted in the capture of Hussein. On September 6, 2016, Eric Maddox, author of the book Mission: Black List 1, spoke to a packed auditorium of cadets, staff, and faculty about his role in the capture of Saddam Hussein.
The arrest of Hussein by Task Force 121 required a virtual “who’s who” of US special operations personnel. Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi tyrant, was at the top of the list. Task Force 121 was established in 2003 to pursue high-value targets in Iraq. Operation Red Dawn was the military operation that resulted in Saddam Hussein’s arrest.
